SEO vs AEO vs GEO: what's the difference, and why all three matter

Five years ago, ranking on Google was the entire game. A buyer searching for a dental clinic, a SaaS tool, or a law firm opened Google, scanned the top three results, and clicked. Today, that same buyer is just as likely to open ChatGPT and ask: "what's the best dental clinic in Dubai that takes walk-ins?"

Ranking on Google still matters. It is just no longer the only thing that matters. Three disciplines now compete for the buyer's attention: SEO, AEO, and GEO. They are related, they overlap, and they require different work. Here is how each one differs and why a business that does only SEO in 2026 is losing buyers to competitors who do all three.

SEO: Search Engine Optimization

SEO is the discipline of ranking on traditional search engines, primarily Google. The goal is to appear in the first three organic results when a buyer searches for a query relevant to your business. That is where roughly 75% of clicks happen.

The work is well understood after 20+ years. You write content targeting specific keywords. You earn backlinks from authoritative domains. You structure your site so Google can crawl it efficiently. You optimise for Core Web Vitals so the site loads fast. You apply schema markup so Google understands what each page is about. You build internal linking that signals which pages matter most.

SEO is slow. Even for a low-competition keyword, expect 60 to 120 days to break into the top 10. For competitive terms in saturated markets like "best CRM software" or "Dubai real estate agent," six to twelve months of consistent work is normal.

What SEO delivers: ranking positions on Google's search results page, organic traffic from those rankings, and the conversions that follow when buyers click through to your site.

AEO: Answer Engine Optimization

AEO is the discipline of making your business citable by AI assistants. When a user asks ChatGPT "what are the best SEO agencies in the UK," ChatGPT names specific agencies in its answer. AEO is the work that gets your business named in that answer.

The mechanics are different from SEO. LLMs do not rank web pages the way Google does. They generate answers from a model trained on structured, credible, consistent information. The signals that matter for AEO are:

  • Structured content. AI engines favour content that directly answers questions. A page that says "We are a dental clinic in Dubai offering implants, cleanings, and orthodontics" is more citable than one that says "We are passionate about smiles."
  • Schema markup. JSON-LD tells AI engines exactly what your business does, who it serves, where it operates, and what it costs. Without schema, an LLM has to guess from your prose. With it, the LLM knows.
  • Directory and review platform presence. LLMs pull heavily from G2, Clutch, Yelp, Trustpilot, TripAdvisor, and category-specific directories. A business missing from those platforms is far less citable than one present on 30 of them.
  • Third-party editorial mentions. A mention in an industry publication, a comparison article, or a credible blog carries weight an LLM was trained to trust.
  • Consistent brand signals. Your business name, address, phone number, and category must match across every platform. Inconsistency is a trust failure that LLMs penalise.

AEO is faster than SEO. A business with clean foundations and serious AEO work can start appearing in AI answers within 4 to 12 weeks.

What AEO delivers: citations in AI-generated answers across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews. The buyer never sees a search results page. They see a single answer that names your business.

GEO: Generative Engine Optimization

GEO is the newer cousin of AEO. The terms overlap heavily, and many people use them interchangeably. The distinction is subtle but useful.

AEO is broader. It covers any AI-driven answer engine, including ones that retrieve and quote sources without generating new prose.

GEO is specifically about generative engines: the AI tools that compose answers from your content rather than just quoting it. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews all fall in this category. GEO focuses on how those engines synthesise information from multiple sources to construct a single coherent answer, and what you can do to ensure your content gets pulled into that synthesis.

The practical work overlaps with AEO almost entirely. Same schema, same directory presence, same structured content. The difference is in how you write the content itself. For GEO specifically, content should be:

  • Decomposable. Each section should answer a single question completely, so a generative engine can lift it without needing the surrounding context.
  • Attributable. Claims should have sources or be specific enough that the engine can attribute them to your brand confidently.
  • Current. Generative engines weight freshness. Content that says "in 2026" or includes recent data outranks content that is undated.
  • Quotable. Short, declarative sentences with concrete facts get pulled into AI answers more than long, hedged paragraphs.
Practical rule. If you are writing content with the question "would an AI extract one sentence from this section?" in mind, you are doing GEO. If you are also tracking whether you appear in the answer at all, you are doing AEO. If you are also checking your Google rankings, you are doing SEO.

Where the three disciplines overlap

The good news is that the work overlaps significantly. A site that does SEO well is roughly 60% of the way to doing AEO and GEO well. The shared foundation is:

  • Clean, fast, mobile-friendly website
  • Clear page structure with proper heading hierarchy
  • Schema markup across all pages
  • Consistent business information across the web
  • High-quality, original content that answers real questions

The 40% that is different lives in two areas. First, the kind of content you write. SEO favours longer, comprehensive pages targeting specific keywords. AEO and GEO favour structured answers to specific questions. Second, the kind of external signals you build. SEO needs backlinks. AEO needs directory presence and third-party mentions.

Why doing only SEO in 2026 is losing

Imagine two competing SEO agencies in Dubai. Both rank on page one of Google for "SEO agency Dubai." A buyer searches that query on Google, sees both, clicks through, and chooses one. Fair fight.

Now imagine the same two agencies, but one has done AEO work and the other has not. A different buyer asks ChatGPT "what's the best SEO agency in Dubai?" ChatGPT names one agency confidently. The buyer messages that agency and never opens Google.

The agency that ranks on Google but is not cited by ChatGPT lost that buyer before the conversation started. They will never know it happened. ChatGPT does not send referral traffic the way Google does. There is no "users who clicked through from AI search" report. The buyer just shows up at the named business.

In 2024, ChatGPT reached 200 million weekly active users. Perplexity handled over 500 million queries per month. Google AI Overviews now sit above organic results for a growing share of commercial queries. The buyer journey has already shifted. The businesses that win in 2026 are the ones whose web presence works for all three: search, AI citation, and generative answers.

What to do next

If you are starting from zero, do them in this order: SEO foundations first, AEO and GEO layered on top. The shared foundation makes all three possible. You cannot do good AEO on a broken website. You cannot get cited by ChatGPT if Google has not crawled you.

If you already have a working website with some Google rankings, the priority shifts. AEO and GEO will compound faster than additional SEO investment because most of your competitors are not doing them yet. The window for being one of the first businesses cited by ChatGPT in your category is open for another 12 to 18 months. After that, it closes the way Google SEO closed in 2012.
