What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It is the practice of structuring your content so generative AI engines pull from it when composing answers to user questions.

When someone asks ChatGPT "what are the best CRMs for small B2B teams in 2026?", ChatGPT does not just retrieve and quote sources. It synthesises an answer from many sources, in its own words. GEO is the work that ensures your business gets pulled into that synthesis.

Most marketers heard of SEO 20 years ago. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the broader umbrella that includes GEO. The terms overlap, but the distinction matters because the work is slightly different.

The difference between AEO and GEO

AEO is broader. It covers any AI-driven answer engine, including ones that retrieve sources and surface them in a relatively quoted form. Google AI Overviews, for example, often quote sources directly.

GEO is specifically about generative engines. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google's Gemini all generate answers from a model trained on enormous amounts of content. The engine does not just retrieve and quote. It composes.

For practical purposes, the work overlaps almost entirely. The same schema markup, the same directory presence, the same structured content. The difference is in the writing itself: GEO emphasises content that can be lifted as a single coherent statement and woven into a generated answer.

How generative engines actually work

Understanding what GEO is requires understanding what the engines are doing.

A generative engine like ChatGPT receives a query, retrieves relevant context (either from its training data or, in browse mode, from live web search), and uses a large language model to compose an answer. The answer is not a list of links. It is a paragraph or two that synthesises information from many sources into a single response.

Three things determine whether your content gets pulled into that answer:

  • Is the engine even aware of your content? If your content is in the training data (or, for browse-enabled queries, in the indexed web), the engine can access it.
  • Is your content relevant to the query? The engine looks for content that semantically matches the question being asked.
  • Is your content structured to be lifted? Generative engines favour content that contains clear, complete answers that can be quoted or paraphrased into the response.

The signals that drive GEO

1. Structured, question-shaped content

Generative engines favour content that answers a specific question directly. A blog post titled "Some thoughts on CRM software" is less GEO-friendly than one titled "Best CRM software for small B2B teams in 2026."

Within the content, each section should answer one question completely. The engine should be able to lift a single paragraph and have it stand alone as a useful answer.

2. Concrete facts, not vague claims

"Our CRM is fast" is not GEO-friendly. "Our CRM loads in 1.2 seconds on average, measured across 10,000 customer accounts" is.

Generative engines prefer to reproduce concrete facts because hallucinations are easier to avoid when the source is explicit. If you want your content quoted, give the engine something specific to quote.

3. Schema markup

JSON-LD schema markup describes your page in a machine-readable way. For GEO specifically, the schemas that matter most are Organization, Service, FAQPage, Article, Person, and Product.

Without schema, the engine has to infer everything from prose. With schema, it has structured fields it can confidently use in answers.

4. Authority signals

Generative engines weight sources by how authoritative they appear. The signals are similar to SEO: backlinks from credible domains, mentions in major publications, presence on trusted directories.

A business mentioned in 30 industry directories and a few editorial articles will get pulled into more answers than one mentioned only on its own site.

5. Freshness

Many generative engines are trained on data up to a specific cutoff date, plus live web access for current queries. Content that is dated and current ranks higher in generative answers than content that is undated or stale.

Including the current year, recent statistics, and recently updated dates in your content all signal to the engine that the content is current.

6. Brand consistency

Your business name, category, and core facts must be identical across every platform. Inconsistency confuses the engine and reduces the chance it confidently names you in an answer.

What GEO is not

Not keyword stuffing

Some early "GEO experts" recommend cramming your content with semantic variations of your target query. This does not work. Generative engines are not bag-of-words systems. They understand meaning, and they penalise content that reads like it was written to game the system.

Write naturally. Answer the question well. Structure it cleanly. That is GEO.

Not just "writing for AI"

Some agencies sell "GEO services" that amount to writing slightly different blog posts. That misses the point.

GEO is a full discipline that requires schema work, directory presence, third-party mentions, and consistent brand signals across the web, in addition to good writing. Writing alone is roughly 30% of GEO. The other 70% is technical and off-site work.

Not a replacement for SEO

GEO works alongside SEO, not instead of it. Most of the foundational work (clean site, schema, content depth) overlaps. The difference is in how you write and where you build external signals.

Simple test for whether your content is GEO-ready. Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity a question your content is supposed to answer. If your content is in the answer, you are doing GEO. If your competitor's content is in the answer, you have work to do.

How to start doing GEO

Working from the foundation up:

  1. Schema markup. Apply Organization, Service, FAQPage, Article schema across your site. This is the highest-leverage technical change.
  2. Restructure content into question-answer format. Each page or section should answer one specific question completely.
  3. Add concrete facts. Replace vague claims with specific numbers, dates, prices, and outcomes.
  4. Get listed on the directories generative engines pull from. G2, Clutch, GoodFirms, Trustpilot, Yelp, industry-specific platforms.
  5. Earn third-party mentions. Comparison articles, industry publications, podcast appearances. These feed into the engine's understanding of who you are.
  6. Test regularly. Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity your target queries weekly. Track whether you appear.

Why GEO matters in 2026

In 2024, ChatGPT reached 200 million weekly active users. Perplexity handled over 500 million queries per month. Google AI Overviews now appear above traditional organic results for a growing share of commercial queries.

The buyer's journey has already shifted. A meaningful share of searches that used to drive Google clicks now end with an AI-generated answer that names a specific business. If your business is not that business, you lost the buyer without ever seeing them.

The window for being one of the first in your category to be cited by generative engines is roughly 12 to 18 months. The same window that closed for SEO around 2012, when early movers locked in the rankings that still drive most of their organic traffic today.
