Short answer: not entirely, but the shift has already happened for a large share of queries that used to be Google's domain. Google still handles billions of queries a day. But the queries that move money in 2026 are increasingly happening on AI assistants instead.

"How do I configure SPF records?" "What's the difference between TypeScript and JavaScript?" These used to drive billions of clicks to Stack Overflow, MDN, and dev blogs. Many of those queries now resolve in ChatGPT without the user ever opening a search engine.
Research and learning queries
Students, researchers, and professionals doing background reading on a topic. ChatGPT and Claude have replaced the first three to five hours of Google research for a meaningful share of these users.
Where Google still dominates
Transactional and local queries
"Plumber near me." "Best dental clinic Dubai." These still happen on Google. The buyer wants a Maps result or a Google Business Profile listing, not a generated paragraph.
Caveat: AI is encroaching here too. ChatGPT can answer "best dental clinic in Dubai" with named recommendations. But Google still wins for "near me" queries that require location-aware results.
Brand and navigational queries
"Rankday pricing." "Notion login." Users who already know what they want and just need to get there still type the brand name into Google. AI does not replace this.
News and very current information
Live sports scores, breaking news, today's weather. Google still dominates. ChatGPT without browse is limited by training data cutoff. ChatGPT with browse is improving but still slower than a Google search for these queries.
Visual queries
Anything that requires images, videos, or maps. Google still wins because the interface returns rich media. AI assistants are catching up but text-first remains the default.
The hybrid: Google AI Overviews
Google itself has embedded AI directly into search. Google AI Overviews appear above traditional organic results for a growing share of commercial queries. The result is a hybrid: traditional Google search at the bottom of the page, AI-generated overview at the top.
For your site, this is a double-edged sword. If your content is the source the AI Overview pulls from, you might get more visibility. If your content is below the Overview, your click-through rate drops because users get the answer without scrolling.
Early data suggests AI Overviews reduce click-through rates by 30 to 60% on queries where they appear. For informational queries, that is a major change in how organic traffic flows.
What the data actually shows
Reliable data on this shift is limited (the AI assistants do not publish detailed query data), but a few signals are clear:
- ChatGPT had 200+ million weekly active users in 2024. A meaningful portion of those interactions are queries that would otherwise have been Googled.
- Perplexity grew from a few million queries per month to over 500 million per month in 18 months. Almost all of that growth is queries diverted from traditional search.

If your content strategy depends on driving traffic to informational blog posts, expect that traffic to decline as AI Overviews and AI assistants pull the answers directly. The way to maintain visibility is to be the source the AI pulls from, not just to rank below the AI summary.
Commercial and brand queries still drive Google traffic
Buyers looking to purchase, compare specific brands, or navigate to a known business still go to Google. SEO for these queries continues to work and will keep working.

Optimising for AI engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews) is now a real channel. Businesses that get cited in AI answers reach buyers that businesses doing only SEO will miss entirely.

The window for early movers is closing
Like every search shift before, the businesses that adapt early lock in the visibility. The early ChatGPT citations and AI Overview features will solidify into a stable set of named businesses, the same way Google rankings did in the early 2010s.
Realistically, the window for being one of the first cited businesses in your category is 12 to 18 months. After that, displacing the incumbents is much harder.

- Keep your SEO foundation strong. The technical site work that powers Google rankings also powers AI citation. Do not abandon SEO.
- Add structured content. Each page should answer specific questions completely, in a way that can be lifted into an AI answer.

- Build presence on the directories AI engines pull from. G2, Clutch, Trustpilot, GoodFirms, plus category-specific platforms.
- Earn third-party mentions. Comparison articles, industry publications, podcasts. These are the sources AI engines learned to trust.
- Test weekly. Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity your target queries. Track whether you appear. Iterate.
The honest answer
AI has not replaced Google. The total search market is still dominated by Google. But AI has changed which queries flow through Google, and Google has changed itself to integrate AI directly. The result is a search ecosystem where:
- Informational queries increasingly resolve in AI assistants or AI Overviews
- Commercial queries still drive Google clicks, but click-through rates depend on whether AI Overviews show up
- Brand and navigational queries are largely unchanged
- Comparison and recommendation queries have shifted significantly to AI
